As an emerging artist, building genuine connections through your art is essential. One of the most meaningful ways to do this is by working with and supporting local art galleries. Small galleries especially play a vital role in Brisbane’s creative ecosystem, offering opportunities for artists and accessible cultural experiences for visitors.
In 2025, I made it my mission to work with as many local Brisbane art galleries as possible. Along the way, I’ve discovered a handful of favourites that I now happily recommend to fellow artists, as well as to visitors and tourists looking to explore Brisbane’s vibrant art scene.
This blog post is the first in a series highlighting small art galleries in Brisbane that are well worth a visit.
Studio on Brunswick Pop-Up Gallery
My first recommendation is Studio on Brunswick Pop-Up Gallery, located in a charming laneway in Fortitude Valley - California Lane.
Tucked away off McLachlan Street, the gallery is a small, light-filled space with a large window that opens directly onto the laneway. Despite its size, it has a strong presence and an inviting street-level connection that draws you in.
Studio on Brunswick features a rotating program of solo exhibitions, group shows, and one major annual art prize. There is always something new to see. The gallery is typically open from 10am to 2pm daily, although hours can vary depending on the exhibiting artist, so it’s a good idea to check the Studio on Brunswick Instagram before visiting.

Make a Lunch-Time Visit
I highly recommend visiting around lunchtime. Just steps away is Fat Dumplings, a local favourite. You can grab some dumplings, sit in the laneway courtyard, and enjoy lunch while taking in the artwork on display. It’s one of those lovely Fortitude Valley experiences that combines food, art and atmosphere.
Studio and Workshop Space Upstairs
Above the gallery is a versatile studio space available for hire. It’s ideal for artist workshops, but it’s also used for book clubs, group meet-ups, small presentations and guest speaker events. Many gatherings extend naturally into the laneway afterwards for dinner or drinks, making it a wonderful community-focused space.
A Recommendation for Artists
Artists, I genuinely recommend exhibiting with Studio on Brunswick, no matter where you are in your artistic career. The gallery offers supportive group exhibitions, and when you’re ready, it’s an excellent space for a first (or next) solo show.
Right now, there is a particularly exciting opportunity with the Independent Visions Art Prize (formerly The Showcase). Entries are currently open, with a closing date of 9 January 2026. I know entering competitions can feel intimidating, but growth happens when you take those steps, so I encourage you to give it a go.
The prize pool is over $11,000, all designed to empower independent and emerging artists.
Last year’s winner was Lisa West, who went on to present a beautiful solo exhibition at the gallery in October 2025.
